Don’t you just love it when people give you unsolicited advice? Probably not. Most people mean well when they are giving advice. Some do it in love, some just do it because they think they know everything. I must admit, I do this. I think we all do it at some point in time.

It is so easy to see a situation from the outside and think “Why are they having such a hard time? Just do…” But so often we don’t consider what a person is really living with. Whether it is a medical or emotional problem or a difficult relationship, it is hard to fully understand a person’s situation without being in it.

This doesn’t mean we need to stop giving advice but we should take time to consider someone’s feelings and life situation before we speak out of turn. One thing I have learned, is to admit that I don’t know the answer to the problem. When someone talks to us about a situation it is not always for advice but just sometimes for support. This is when I find it is best to pray with the person. Instead of just saying you will pray for them, do it right then. On the phone or in person it doesn’t matter. It shows that you care and that you are taking their problem to the One who does have the answer.

The Bible is full of great advice but  sometimes I feel like it is easier said than done.

Psalm 27:13-14 I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord. 

These have become some of my favorite verses during this time in my life. It is easy to despair when you think of things in human terms. But when you believe in the power of God, all things are possible with Him. But the waiting is where you need the most help and that is a reason why it says wait for the Lord twice. It could probably say it a couple more times and I would still feel it is a hard thing to do. But if you read in between the lines here, you can see that you can be strong and take courage in the Lord. You aren’t doing this on your own. Draw strength from the Lord. He is the source.

So while it might seem impossible to wait for the Lord, remember that His timing is not ours.

2 Peter 3:8-9 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

So whether you need advice or you are asked for advice go to the One who has it all. Sometimes it is easier said than done but remember that you are not doing it on your own.
